John Deere Compact Track Loaders — aka Tracked Skid Steers
A compact track loader (CTL) is the tracked cousin of the skid steer. Same idea — compact, zero-turn, quick-attach bucket and attachments — but instead of wheels it runs on rubber tracks. That one change is the whole story: tracks spread roughly 12,000 lb of machine over about 4.5–5.5 psi of ground pressure, so a CTL floats over soft ground, mud, and finished lawns where a wheeled skid steer would dig itself in. You trade a little speed and a little rated capacity for flotation, traction, and the ability to work in conditions that sideline everything else. On Gulf Coast dirt — sugar sand, red clay after a rain, soggy subdivision lots — that’s the difference between working and waiting.
What sets the Deere CTLs apart
- Electrohydraulic (EH) controls. Joystick operation with switchable ISO/H-pattern, plus speed and sensitivity presets. New operators get productive fast; experienced ones can fine-tune the machine to the attachment.
- High-flow hydraulics. Up to 39–44 gpm on the big frames (331/333/335 P-Tier), which is what lets you run the hungry attachments — mulching heads, cold planers, large augers, stump grinders. Standard flow is 25 gpm.
- Power Quik-Tatch and attachment ecosystem. Deere’s quick-attach plus a deep attachment lineup means one machine covers grading, digging, lifting, sweeping, and land clearing in a single rental.
- Cab and serviceability. Sealed, pressurized cab option with HVAC (a real factor on 90° Baldwin County afternoons), and tilt-up cab plus wide-opening engine doors for daily checks. Reversing fan drive is available to blow debris out of the coolers — worth it for land-clearing work.
- Ride control and self-leveling. Optional ride control smooths load carry over rough ground so you’re not spilling a heaped bucket, and bucket self-leveling keeps pallets and pipe from tipping.
Where they earn their keep
Site prep and grading, subdivision and commercial earthwork, utility trenching support, demolition cleanup, land clearing with a mulcher, material handling around the jobsite, and final grade/landscape work. If the job involves soft ground, slopes, or finished surfaces you can’t tear up, the tracks pay for themselves. A CTL with a 4-in-1 bucket and a set of pallet forks can replace two or three dedicated machines on a small commercial site.
The AAM rental: John Deere 331G
AAM runs the 331G — 91.2 hp, 3,100 lb rated operating capacity, 11,900 lb operating weight, 11 ft hinge-pin height with vertical lift. It sits right in the sweet spot of the lineup: enough muscle for real earthmoving and high-flow attachments, still compact enough to trailer easily and maneuver on tight residential or commercial sites.
Rates: $445/day, $1,250/week, $2,660/month. No tax or fees included.
